Big Four against industry, measured in net pay
Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG have a deserved reputation for the training they provide, and an equally deserved one for salaries that never quite reflect the hours behind them.
| Role | Big Four | Industry | Monthly Net Difference (TX) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry Analyst (0-2 yrs) | $62,000-$72,000 | $55,000-$68,000 | Big 4: +$300-$500/mo |
| Senior Associate (3-5 yrs) | $85,000-$105,000 | $80,000-$105,000 | Roughly equal |
| Manager (6-8 yrs) | $110,000-$140,000 | $110,000-$150,000 | Industry: equal or better |
| Senior Manager / Director | $150,000-$200,000 | $140,000-$190,000 | Big 4: slightly ahead |
At senior grades the Big Four look competitive on base pay, while total compensation in industry, once bonus and equity are counted, frequently beats public accounting from manager level upward. The standard pattern is three to five years in a firm, the CPA earned along the way, then a move into industry for the same money and considerably better hours.
Does the CPA licence pay for itself?
Mid-career, the licence is worth something like $10,000 to $20,000 a year, which lands as roughly $600 to $1,200 extra a month after tax. Getting there costs $3,000 to $5,000 in fees and study materials and takes most candidates 300 to 400 hours across the four sections. At mid-career salaries the whole outlay is recovered inside four months.
Frequently asked questions
A staff accountant in the first two years earns $52,000 to $68,000 and keeps roughly $3,641 to $4,697 a month in Texas. Move up to senior on $72,000 to $90,000 and that becomes $5,010 to $6,190. At manager level, worth $90,000 to $120,000, Texas take-home runs $6,190 to $7,815. The BLS median of about $79,000 leaves roughly $5,500 a month in a state with no income tax.
It pays, though not evenly across a career. At entry level the CPA premium is modest, roughly $5,000 to $8,000 a year. From manager upward, licensed accountants earn $15,000 to $25,000 more than unlicensed colleagues, worth $900 to $1,500 a month after tax. The bigger effect is on promotion, since most controller and CFO posts at public companies require the license outright.
Solidly above average, with a ceiling you can count on. The BLS median near $79,000 sits comfortably over the national median wage, though where you finish depends on the path taken. Controllers and CFOs reach $200,000 to $400,000 and beyond, while a bookkeeper or general staff accountant without the CPA can flatten out at $60,000 to $70,000. The real financial advantage is stability, because recessions do not delete the accounting function the way they delete other roles.
