CA or CPA: is the premium worth the effort?

Two designations dominate: Chartered Accountant through CA ANZ and CPA through CPA Australia. Both carry weight. The CA is generally seen as the higher-status qualification in public practice, whether at the Big Four or mid-tier firms, while the CPA appears more often across industry and government.

Five to eight years in, a CA holder earns A$8,000 to A$15,000 more than a colleague without the designation, which is roughly A$400 to A$700 a month after tax. The programme takes three years of mentored experience alongside coursework, and typically pays for itself within eighteen months to two years.

Frequently asked questions

A graduate accountant on A$55,000 to A$70,000 keeps roughly A$3,783 to A$4,749 a month. A senior accountant holding CA on A$95,000 to A$125,000 keeps A$6,210 to A$7,700, and a controller on A$145,000 about A$8,700. None of these count the 12% employer super paid on top.

It has, since accounting joined the skills shortage list in 2023. Mid-career salaries have risen considerably as a result, and Australia has become an appealing destination for qualified accountants from Britain, New Zealand and South Africa. Mutual recognition agreements link CA ANZ and CPA to the British ICAEW and ACCA, which keeps migration relatively simple for anyone already qualified.
