Big Four against the Mittelstand, honestly compared

Pay splits sharply between the Big Four, meaning Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG, and the small and medium companies of the Mittelstand that carry the German economy:

RoleBig Four GermanyMittelstand
Junior Auditor€42,000-€52,000€32,000-€42,000
Senior Consultant / Prüfer€60,000-€80,000€48,000-€65,000
Manager€80,000-€110,000€65,000-€85,000
Senior Manager / Director€110,000-€150,000€85,000-€115,000

The Big Four pay roughly 20% to 30% above equivalent Mittelstand roles, and ask for considerably longer hours in return, particularly through the January to April audit season. The familiar pattern is three to five years in a firm, the Steuerberater or Wirtschaftsprüfer examination passed, then a move into industry where the hours are humane.

Frequently asked questions

If tax advisory is where you want to end up, yes. The Steuerberater qualification asks for three years of experience after a relevant degree and a state examination with a fearsome reputation, and it adds €15,000 to €25,000 a year at mid-career, worth €700 to €1,200 a month in hand. Anyone who goes on to open their own Kanzlei can draw €80,000 to €200,000 and beyond in profit distributions. Roughly 40% to 50% pass the examination at each sitting.
