CPP, EI and RRSP: what leaves the paycheque

Three Canada-specific deductions affect every software engineer's take-home:

  • CPP (Canada Pension Plan): 5.95% on earnings between C$3,500-C$69,700 ($3,948/year at maximum). CPP2 applies on C$69,700-C$81,300 at 4% (up to C$463 extra). You stop paying once you hit the YMPE each year.
  • EI (Employment Insurance): 1.66% on insurable earnings up to C$63,200 (maximum C$1,049/year). Funds up to 45 weeks of unemployment benefits at 55% of earnings.
  • RRSP contributions: Unlike 401(k) in the US, RRSP is not automatically deducted from payroll. But contributions reduce taxable income dollar for dollar. A senior engineer contributing C$20,000/year to RRSP on C$130,000 reduces their tax bill by approximately C$5,600-C$6,800 depending on province.

Frequently asked questions

A mid-level engineer in Ontario on C$100,000 keeps roughly C$6,300 to C$6,500 a month once federal tax, Ontario provincial tax, CPP and EI are paid. A senior on C$135,000 keeps about C$7,700. Moderate: considerably better than Germany, slightly under Australia on purchasing power and well under the United States. Canadian technology salaries have climbed substantially since 2020, helped by American remote hiring, and still sit 30% to 50% below comparable American roles in absolute terms. Weighing Canada against Australia, total compensation lands broadly level, with Canada winning on immigration accessibility and Australia on weather and balance. Weighing the United States against Canada, the American side wins financially at senior level by a wide margin.

Taking every experience level together, the average Canadian software engineer earns roughly C$87,855 to C$105,753 in 2026. In Ontario and BC, engineers with three to six years behind them earn C$95,000 to C$120,000. Vancouver and Toronto normally carry a 10% to 15% premium over the national average. Entry level begins at C$65,000 to C$80,000, and senior engineers past eight years typically earn C$130,000 to C$170,000.
