Toronto and Montreal are not the same market

The two cities have developed quite different characters. Toronto runs on financial services, with major data teams at RBC, TD and Scotiabank, alongside retail through Loblaw and Shopify and a layer of technology scale-ups. Montreal leads on academic AI research through Mila, the alumni of Element AI and a steady spillover from universities into industry, paying slightly less while attracting specialists in machine learning research.

Frequently asked questions

A junior analyst in Ontario on C$55,000 to C$72,000 keeps roughly C$3,690 to C$4,737 a month. Mid-level on C$90,000 gives about C$5,500, and a senior on C$110,000 around C$6,300. Alberta's lower flat provincial rate adds C$200 to C$300 a month at each level.

Since 2020, few Canadian roles have grown faster or been more in demand. Financial sector appetite from the banks and insurers, a technology sector expanding across Toronto and Vancouver, and government investment in data infrastructure have together kept demand high and salaries competitive. Python, SQL and cloud skills across AWS and GCP separate candidates from mid-level upward. The path to Head of Analytics or VP of Data reaches C$150,000 to C$200,000, comfortably inside the top 10% of Canadian earners.
