What Israel takes from an engineer in 2026

Mas hachnasa runs progressively through seven brackets, opening at 10% and reaching 50% above ₪663,240 a year. Most engineers land somewhere between 20% and 35% at the margin. Those headline rates look punishing, and the effective rate comes out considerably lower thanks to two mechanisms.

The first is nekudot zikui, or credit points. Every resident holds 2.25 basic points worth ₪2,276 each against annual liability, so ₪5,121 comes off the bill immediately. Children, new immigrants and certain other groups receive more. An oleh with one child might hold 4.5 to 6 points, cutting a first-year tax bill by ₪10,000 to ₪13,500.

The second is pension deductibility. Since the 2017 reform, employees must pay 7% of salary into a pension fund, and that contribution comes out of taxable income. On ₪280,000 it shelters ₪19,600, worth roughly ₪6,000 to ₪7,000 in tax saved depending on the marginal bracket.

Bituach leumi and mas briut together come to about 6.6% on monthly income under ₪6,331 and more above it, with a ceiling applying at higher incomes. For a median engineer the two combined run near ₪18,000 a year, unpleasant but entirely predictable.

Income Tax Bracket (Annual) Rate
Up to ₪75,960 10%
₪75,961 - ₪108,960 14%
₪108,961 - ₪180,120 20%
₪180,121 - ₪251,040 31%
₪251,041 - ₪514,920 35%
₪514,921 - ₪663,240 47%
₪663,241+ 50%

Who is hiring engineers, and what they pay

For a country of nine million, the technology ecosystem is extraordinarily concentrated. Tel Aviv's Silicon Wadi holds more venture-backed startups per head than almost anywhere on the planet, which produces fierce competition for engineers and salaries that stand comparison with the major European capitals.

Wix, the website builder listed on NASDAQ, is among the largest technology employers in the country with more than 6,000 staff worldwide, and pays engineers ₪220,000 to ₪380,000 in cash plus RSUs. Monday.com ranks among the most prestigious destinations for Israeli engineers, where senior packages routinely reach ₪600,000 to ₪900,000 once equity is counted. CyberArk, Check Point Software and NICE Systems are the established names, paying well without matching the aggression of the fast-growing unicorns.

Mobileye, now an Intel subsidiary listed on NASDAQ, dominates autonomous vehicle software here, paying engineers on perception systems and ADAS firmware ₪350,000 to ₪600,000 in cash. Varonis, Cato Networks, AppsFlyer and Fiverr fill out the mid-sized growth companies where cash and equity together compete seriously.

American big tech research centres, meaning Microsoft Israel R&D behind significant parts of Office and Azure, Google Israel, Amazon AWS Israel and Meta Israel, pay hybrid packages in dollars and shekels. Senior engineers there commonly earn $130,000 to $200,000 gross, which converts at current rates to ₪480,000 to ₪740,000. Those offices anchor the talent market and force domestic companies to keep pace.

Defence technology at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries pays somewhat below the commercial startup range, ₪200,000 to ₪350,000 for senior engineers, in exchange for exceptional stability, clearance experience and engineering problems that are genuinely interesting.

ESOP and RSUs: why cash pay understates the package by 30% to 100%

Any account of Israeli engineering pay that skips equity is incomplete. Employee stock option plans and restricted stock units are not perks at technology companies here; they have been a structural part of how people are paid since the 1990s. Joining a venture-backed Israeli startup without receiving a grant would be unusual.

At a pre-seed or seed-stage startup, an early senior engineer may receive between 0.2% and 0.8% of the company, vesting over four years behind a one-year cliff. Should the company reach a real exit, an acquisition at $200M or a listing above $500M, that grant is worth ₪2,500,000 to ₪25,000,000 before tax. Qualifying option gains held in a 102 track for 24 months are charged at 25%, well below the income tax that cash compensation would attract.

At established late-stage unicorns such as Papaya Global, Tipalti or Monday.com, mid-level engineers see ₪120,000 to ₪250,000 of RSUs vesting each year, and senior engineers ₪300,000 to ₪600,000. Those appear on the payslip and are taxed as income, so the tables above apply to them, and they are nonetheless real money.

Unit 8200 alumni premium: the elite cyber intelligence unit turns out engineers whose market value runs far ahead of their formal CV. Someone leaving at 26 after four years of classified signals intelligence work typically commands senior engineer money, beyond ₪300,000, in their first commercial job. Dozens of the country's most successful companies, CyberArk, SOSA, Cato Networks and Team8 among them, were founded by its veterans.

Tel Aviv prices against Tel Aviv salaries

Tel Aviv appears near the top of every global cost-of-living ranking for expatriates. One bedroom in the centre runs ₪7,000 to ₪10,000 a month, so a mid-level engineer taking home ₪16,000 hands over between 44% and 63% of net income in rent alone. In Berlin the equivalent flat costs €1,400 against a €3,600 net salary, which is 39%, and even that is considered uncomfortable.

Outside the centre the numbers change quickly. Bat Yam, Rishon LeZion, Rehovot and Petah Tikva all sit within 30 to 40 minutes by train and offer two bedrooms for ₪4,500 to ₪6,500 a month. Plenty of mid-career engineers take that trade, accepting a forty-minute commute in exchange for ₪3,000 to ₪4,000 extra each month.

Food, transport and services cost roughly what they do in Western European capitals. Dinner for two runs ₪200 to ₪350, a monthly Rav-Kav transport card in Tel Aviv costs ₪250, and supermarket prices sit above Central and Eastern Europe while matching Amsterdam or Stockholm.

Put honestly, a median engineer here lives comfortably rather than luxuriously on cash salary alone. Wealth is built through equity events, which happen more often in Israel than anywhere outside the United States. That asymmetry, a moderate monthly figure alongside equity capable of changing everything, is what defines the Israeli technology career.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average software engineer salary in Israel in 2026?
The median cash compensation for a software engineer in Israel is approximately ₪280,000/year (around €70,000). This translates to roughly ₪15,450/month take-home after bituach leumi, mas briut, income tax, and the mandatory 7% pension contribution. Total compensation including vesting ESOP/RSUs is frequently 30-100% higher at established companies.
How much is bituach leumi for software engineers?
Bituach Leumi (national insurance) employee contribution is 3.5% on monthly income up to ₪6,331, then 12% above that threshold. Mas briut (health tax) adds 3.1% below the threshold and 5% above. For a ₪280,000/year engineer, combined bituach leumi and health tax is approximately ₪18,000/year. Employers also pay their own separate BL contribution on top of this.
Is Israel software engineering salary competitive with Europe?
In cash terms, senior Israeli engineers (₪350,000-₪550,000) earn roughly €87,500-€137,500 - comparable to senior engineers in Amsterdam, Stockholm, or London, and above most German, French, or Spanish tech salaries. When equity is included - which it routinely is in Israeli tech - total compensation regularly surpasses what equivalent-level engineers earn anywhere in Europe.
Do olim (new immigrants) get tax benefits as software engineers?
Yes. New immigrants (olim hadashim) receive significant income tax benefits for 10 years after arriving in Israel. For the first 4 years, overseas income may be exempt entirely. Additionally, olim receive extra credit points (nekudot zikui) in their first years, reducing income tax liability by an additional ₪5,000-₪10,000/year beyond the basic 2.25 points. This makes Israel unusually attractive for experienced engineers relocating from abroad.
How is ESOP/RSU equity taxed in Israel?
Options held under the Section 102 Capital Gains track for at least 24 months are taxed at 25% capital gains tax at exit - significantly lower than the income tax rate (up to 50%) that would apply to equivalent cash income. RSUs vesting at public companies are taxed as income at the time of vesting. Israeli tax law on equity is complex; most tech companies provide tax advisory as part of the ESOP plan administration.
