Why TyEL charges more as you get older

TyEL, the employee pension contribution, is not one flat percentage. It is banded by age, and the bands run counter to intuition, since anyone between 53 and 62 pays a distinctly higher rate than younger colleagues and than those aged 63 and above.

  • This "53-62 higher band" was introduced as part of pension reforms to accelerate contribution accrual in the years before typical retirement age
  • For a mid-career erikoislääkäri or ylilääkäri in that age band, the effective take-home is measurably lower than a younger or older colleague earning an identical gross salary
  • This calculator (and the figures above) use a standard blended contribution rate - if you're in the 53-62 band, expect your actual net to run somewhat below the table, and if you're under 53 or 63+, somewhat above

It is a small thing that catches people out mid-career, when an identical pay rise fails to lift their take-home as much as it lifts a younger colleague's.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a doctor take home after tax in Finland?

An erikoistuva lääkäri (specialising physician) on €65,000 takes home about €3,516/month. A more senior erikoistuva lääkäri on €85,000 takes home roughly €4,222/month. A fully qualified erikoislääkäri on €115,000 takes home approximately €5,093/month.

Why does pension contribution vary by age in Finland?

Finland's TyEL employee pension contribution is age-banded, with workers aged 53-62 paying a higher rate than both younger and older employees, as part of pension reforms accelerating accrual before typical retirement age. This means take-home for identical gross salaries can differ measurably by age band.

How much tax does a Finnish doctor pay?

An erikoistuva lääkäri on €85,000 pays around 48.2% effective rate (state tax, municipal tax, and pension/unemployment contributions combined). An erikoislääkäri on €115,000 pays about 54.6%, rising toward 60% at ylilääkäri/chief physician income levels.

Can I look up a Finnish doctor's actual salary?

Yes, within limits. Finland publishes an annual public tax list (verotustiedot) each November showing income and tax paid for the previous year, and media outlets routinely publish searchable "who earns what" tools by profession and region - a distinctly Nordic level of income transparency.
